The alfalfa field has been full of challenges. Spring rain ruined the first hay cutting. Our crew has been busy since the beginning of this month pulling and bagging a new weed. However, we think we have a good organic long-term remedy for cheat grass. We cut the first cutting of hay just before alfalfa bloom and before cheat grass turn red, becomes inedible and produces seed. Hopefully, we will outlive the cheat grass if we prevent new seeds from developing.
We are hard at work preparing the garden for transition to commercial seed production next season. End of summer means weeding, cover cropping, exploring seed markets and planning next year's workforce.
